Alternative to < li > tags

December2

While developing my current website for my business i needed to come up with a replacement for the <li> tag and after thinking about it i cam up with two ways of doing it. I shall qucikly share them with you.

1. CSS

The first thing you could do if you still really wanted/needed to use a tag would be to add a new css element.

TAG {
display: list-item;
list-style-type: disc;
}

of course change “TAG” to what you could like your tag to be like, “list” and use it as <lis></lis>

2.HTML

The other and proberlly more simple way for you non CSS users out there(I know you exist) you can use the following code to generate a bullet point.

&#8226;

I hope that helped guys, its only small but like me it could make not having to remake your navigation.

The domain is a top level domain, the intended use for this ending is for telecommunication companys and will be use mostly via dns much like the .mobi domain name. Although alike the .mobi name you can have a HTML frontend. .tel enables to create a communication portal online to manage in real time the way that clients can communicate with you.

As specified by telnic:

Unified contact directory services as text-based alternative to fragmented communications solutions

Registered names will be policed to weed out abusive registrations or registrants not in proper community

Direct second-level registrations will be allowed; digits will be restricted to avoid conflict with phone numbers

The domain has just entered its “sunrise” procedure. This month (November) mostly overlooked by the press the domain vip.tel was launched as a trial by telnic. See it here

What is Web 2.0?

November28

Web 2.0 is generally referred to as a way of doing something on the internet or a particular style. Many people see it as a resurgence in the web economy. From a style point of view web 2.0 attributes are:

  • Clean
  • Mininalistic
  • Bright
  • Simple (Simplicity is key)

Web 2.0 is about the style and workings of a website. When HTML was created there were many ways of doing various things, now it has been simplified over the years. Simplicity is the most important thing when your creating a new site with a “2.0 Mind”. Graphics for web 2.0 websites are either seen to be “shiny” or clean. Below is an example of generally recognised Web 2.0 text.

Also another effect that is seen as a Web 2.0 effect is the reflection of images, you can do this in Fireworks, Photoshop and many other image editing programs. If your looking for a place to start with creating reflections, Initially it is only an upside down image then it is faded into the background. To add other effects please Google it. Below is an example of a reflected image.

Many Web 2.0 sites centre the design on your screen. Although as Web 2.0 has developed with the introduction of many new web technologies it has changed. For example if you were to build a site using flash or silverlight you have the opportunity to utilize the whole screen, shown in studies many people like this more than having their content in one place. DPOV ( That means it is going to be so much more difficult for positioning web objects on a web page) in stead of using “px” for size values it would be easier if you were to utilize the use of “%”.

Layout

Layout is another very important thing about Web 2.0, if not this is the most important thing.

Some do’s:

  • Distinct Top Section
  • Simple Navigation
  • Solid Areas Of Content
  • Bold Logo
  • Bold/Larger Text Headings
  • Strong Colours
  • Rich Surfaces (SHINY!)
  • Gradients
  • Inspiring Icons

Lunascape - 3 Level Browser Fusion

November28

I am still overwhelmed with how amazing this little browser is, ok it isnt that little but its so very cool. The coolness makes up for the additional components it needs to run.

The browser is a 3 level fusion using:

  • Trident (IE)
  • Gecko (Firefox, Flock)
  • WebKit (Safari, Chrome)

For developers this is by far the best browsers out there at the current moment. As a website developer myself I am continuously switching with Virtual PC’s or browsers just to test a site out in an alternative browser.

Lunascape has an interface which is also a fusion between, Firefox 2 and the likes of various Opera releases. Here is a list of very quick new interface gadgets I can see:

  • RSS News feed ticking next to tabs
  • RSS in links toolbar as standard
  • Stylish tabs
  • Hover enabled sidebar with optional, dragable buttons
  • Switch Rending kit
  • Full range of status icons
  • Split windows
  • Lock Tabs
  • Added Tools
  • Page Block controls
  • Custom security menus and options
  • Full range of favorites links.

Using the switch rending button in this browser gives developers the chance to switch from one kit to another, the only thing this browser is missing is a spell checker!

This browser is just pure brilliance, oh and did I forget to tell you that it takes up nearly no memory and is more reliable than any other browser currently released.

Remember this is only an APLHA!

$6000 HP Magic Giveaway

November27

Right while browsing around today i have been many many sites giving away “$6000 of HP hardware and windows licenses.” This is great but how and why?

How?
In the middle of “The credit crunch” and huge companies are getting rid of hardware? Faulty? discontinued? Nope! Simply this is just Christmas sprit and as for what they are giving away, its the latest hardware and versions of Windows! You’ll see why they are doing this in a minute. The gifts will given away after the blogs involved have reviewed them and featured on their website.

Why?

With all this talk about Windows 7 after the massive PDC event this year HP are very big partners with Microsoft. The new touch technology in Windows 7 works with some of the hardware being given away. Be sure to see someone reviews when someone loads windows 7 6801+ onto it. HP are simply looking for a spotlight on some of the showcase of their hardware, they are ahead of everyone else and already developing things many companies dont even support. The market is pushed everyday by HP and this is a point to be focused on.

What do you have to do?

The criteria varies from blog to blog for winning these prizes. So please go and check all the sites to see how they will run them.

What does $6000 get you?

I would like to ask everyone to look at istartedsomething and neowin during this competition as they both are good sites to keep an eye on.

Check it out at HP

Lycos Europe Web Hosting Closes Down

November27

I used to use this site for so many things but over time i have drifted away to my french company, OVH. I still have my old account at Lycos and this morning as i check my inbox I had an e-mail from customer services.

Click on the above image for a larger version.

Lycos Europe has been loosing money for a while now and now it is time to admit it and sell of some assets to stay ahead of the game for such companies like Google and Yahoo. As said above in the picture customers are going to be transfered to alternate hosters. Minimal downtime for clients is predicted.

Invision Power Board 3 Held up

November26

Thousands of people use Invision Power Board and it is seen as the best forum software. Over the last few years we have seen the releases move from basic forum posting and discussion to fully fledged communities with hundreds of games, posts and helpful attachments.

The development of “IBP 3.0″ has been going very well, note the checklist below of updates ect… Today at 6:30 it was announced that IPS plan to have a public BETA out for download by the end of the year. This is only a very small delay as they still have much to do. The final product will not be released this year but will be in Quarter 1 2009.

Changes

  • Gravatar Support
  • Warn Panel Updates
  1. Option to “ban” a member permanently
  2. Increase or decrease warn by a custom ammount
  3. Ability to unapprove (hide) all member’s posts/topics
  4. Member’s current reputation displayed
  • Mutual Friends
  • Reputation Logs
  • Enhanced Watched Topics/Forums
  • Filter Forum by New Topics
  • Public Polls

As a staff member on a few forums myself many of these new features will be so very useful, although I have been suing a pre-beta for a while now the only thing that does disturb me is the loading time between IPB and phpBB. According to studies from betaarchive.co.uk the loading time differs by about 7 seconds. This is something they really must pay attention too.

Please comment and tell me what you would like to see in the new release, when betas are released we will review and link to mirrored download on our servers.

Meanwhile: http://ipb3preview.ipslink.com/index Have a present ;)

FetchMP3 - Youtube to MP3

November23

I have known about this for a little while and the developer is called Andrew (see blogroll) so i wanted to give it as much support as i could.

What is it?

It is a unique service that allows you to not only download your favorite videos in MP3s, but it also helps you find new music to listen to!

Although the title of this page says “youtube to MP3″ i lie, Its not only youtube but millions of songs are on youtube so it is a good resource, the site searches:

  • Youtube
  • Myspace
  • Veoh
  • Yahoo

The site is amazing and needs support as it is a unique and great creation!

<script type="text/javascript" src="js/scriptaculous.js?load=effects,builder"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="js/lightbox.js"></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="css/lightbox.css" type="text/css" media="screen" />

  • When you have added the image add rel=”lightbox” into your img code, like this:
